The JUSTMIG project examines temporary labour migration trends and the employment of migrant workers on fixed-term contracts across six EU countries and three EU Candidate Countries, which are third countries of origin for many workers. This report focuses on the case of Austria, which is an important receiving country for temporary labour migration. Our report discusses Austria's labour market dynamics, highlighting the vulnerabilities faced by migrant workers linked to their temporary employment and/or residence. We underscore how the temporariness of employment affects both workers' rights and their integration into existing industrial relations structures. The report also reviews Austria's temporary labour migration policies and the macro trends among its foreign workforce. In this study, we concentrate on two specific sectors; the food and drink manufacturing and long-term care sectors, where migrant workers frequently occupy temporary roles. By analysing existing data and the roles of key social partners, the report emphasises the need for targeted policies that address the implications of temporary migrant employment on both the labour market and industrial relations, advocating for a more sustainable and socially just approach to these growing challenges.
