Overcoming barriers to health and long-term care for older migrants: Strategies for culturally sensitive care

Hakki Demirkapu, Vrije Universiteit Brussels and Medisina medical clinics

This presentation will explore the key barriers that older migrants face in accessing health and long-term care, including limited health literacy, language barriers, cultural sensitivities, and religious beliefs. Through case examples and practical tips, participants will gain insights into addressing these challenges effectively. Additionally, we will share insights from Belgium’s nursing home which implements a culturally sensitive care model.

Building trust in context of superdiversity: best practices from home care organisations in the Netherlands

Hanna Carlsson, Radboud University

This presentation discusses what care workers can do to build trust with people from diverse backgrounds, and how organisations facilitate these practices. Some older people with migration backgrounds have low trust in care professionals. Research shows that one way to build trust is to meet needs that are important to clients' needs, even if those needs do not fit the care package. In this presentation it is discussed how managers and care workers together can find ways to balance the need to build trust with the need to uphold boundaries and prevent overburdening of staff.
