Policy brief: Informal carer policy in well-developed LTC systems

Informal carers face a range of challenges, and many countries have introduced policy measures to directly support them. This Policy Brief reviews such measures in four countries with well-developed formal long-term care systems: Germany, Finland, Lithuania, and the Netherlands. The analysis shows that these countries provide financial support, care leave, social security benefits, and measures to promote carers’ well-being, although priorities differ. Despite these efforts, important challenges remain, including addressing low take-up of existing measures, the need to strengthen and broaden support, and better recognition of the diverse situations of informal carers when further developing measures. These findings, based on the study “Good practices in supporting informal carers” and the related report, offer valuable insights for future policy development within and beyond the analysed country cases.
