The Youth Health Organisation (YHO) invited our public health consultant, Cornelius (Cees) Goos, to give a keynote speech at a European Regional Alcohol Youth Conference, which was held 25-28 July 2022 in Ireland. The YHO is a relatively young agency working towards good health and wellbeing of young people through promotion of healthy lifestyles and prevention of non-communicable diseases.
The conference in Ireland brought together more than 30 young people from all over Europe representing various youth organisations. Very lively discussions took place over strategies to reduce the manifold harms caused to society and public health by alcohol consumption. The group agreed on the urgent need to address this issue more powerfully at political level and at the level of all sorts of individual social organisations, not in the least youth organisations themselves.
