SWaPOL Social Work and Policing

Final Project Conference

DESCRIPTION

Social Work and Policing focuses on the professional relationship between police and social work. Both the police and social work organisations are concerned with public order, but they differ significantly in organisational structures, responsibilities and work methods. Hence, vulnerable people such as substance users and homeless persons are sometimes caught between law enforcement and social welfare policies. In response to this tension, this new curriculum for a joint vocational training for social workers and police integrates approaches of community policing and social support services.

The SWaPOL training covers professional insights, didactical exercises and field visits to demonstrate that social control and social support can be pursued together. In this conference project partners in Austria, Belgium and Portugal will

  1. present the curriculum for the SWaPOL training
  2. discussion about opportunities for similar cross-disciplinary vocational trainings between police and social work in Europe.

The "Handbook for Trainers" will be published on the webpage www.swapol.eu in English shortly.
