BACKGROUND

During the past decades, industry went through big changes towards more intelligent production (‘Internet of things’). The so-called ‘Industry 4.0’ is regarded as the 4th Industrial Revolution and will have enormous impacts on the world of work. It influences qualification needs, work organisation, the quality of work, and, more generally, the collaboration between humans and technology. To assist SMEs in their preparation for current and upcoming changes, a curriculum for a training course ‘Work 4.0’ was developed. The course covered major work-related topics in its seven training modules such as new forms of work organisation, changes/needs for ‘learning & skills’, diversity, gender and the ageing of the workforce. The course was implemented during the first months of 2017.

AIMS

The project objectives were to

  • develop a curriculum for SMEs regarding the changes of work (i.e. digitalisation and automatization processes); and to
  • implement the training course in Styria so that SMEs are better prepared for the changes within their enterprise and encouraged to proactively address the challenges by seeking for sustainable solutions.

METHODS

The methods implemented concerned

  • the implementation of a modular-based training course for SMEs in Styria (seven modules), and
  • project evaluation.
