Maria M. Hofmarcher-Holzhacker
Maria M. Hofmarcher-Holzhacker is senior researcher at the Institute for
Advanced Studies (IHS). She returned to this position from her two-year OECD appointment at
the beginning of 2008 where she conducted and oversaw research and policy analysis in the area of efficiency of health care
delivery and long-term care. Her professional focus is in applied scientific research in the area of health and social care
in OECD and in transition countries.
Earlier in her career she was a practicing registered nurse for more than ten years. After
earning her degree in economics from the University Vienna she was a researcher at the Austrian Health Institute and after receiving
a degree in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins University she worked as an economist for the city of Vienna. She acted as a consultant
to the World Bank and provided technical and scientific assistance to Public Health research at the European Commission. In the course of
her working experience, she has been responsible to conduct, plan, coordinate and supervise substantive research projects and studies
related to health and social care issues on a national as well as international level. She has published many papers among them the
quarterly publication: Health System Watch, edited by the Austria Federation of Social Health Insurance Institutions since 1999 and
available under www.ihs.ac.at.
She is the principal author of Health System Reviews Austria led by the European Observatory on Health
Care Systems and since its start in 2002 she acts as the Austrian correspondent of the international health policy monitor network
led by the Bertelsmann Foundation. In January 2008 she was appointed as an adviser to the Minister of Health.
